Once a year sounds good to me. It's a good occasion to examine all the wear on the parts and make sure everything is in order.Lock the slide back with the slide lock. Then with your right hand over the injection port your thumb grip around the grip safety. Close grip tightly the slide will go back. Then you will be able to put a paper clip in the guide rod hole. Release your grip and the slide will come off.
